We’ve made some changes to our packages, particularly our free plan - Basic. The first point to note is that our Basic plan is still free. We remain committed to providing a free version of Hotjar for individuals working on their own online project or just starting their business.
We’ve spoken to our customers and looked at the usage data to understand which features they really need at each stage in their growth. We learned that our Basic plan isn’t providing some features that users do need, and is providing some features that users don’t need at the early stage for which this plan is designed. For Hotjar users, it will now be easier to find the right plan that gives you what you need. For Hotjar, our packages will be better aligned with the value we’re providing at each stage, and we’ll be enabled to add lots more value in the future.
With Continuous Capture, Hotjar automatically and continuously collects data from across your site up to the session allowance on your plan. No more starting or restarting snapshots! Simply open Hotjar and all of your user sessions will be ready and waiting for you to discover and analyze.
Highlights is the new way to snip, save, share, and analyze your most important insights. With all of your meaningful insights organized in one place, you can easily discover opportunities, validate assumptions, and get buy-in. Highlights was added to all plans a few weeks back and has now been added to Basic.
Highlights does a much better job of sorting recordings than the old methods of manually tagging and favoriting. You now have the option to save snippets of recordings as highlights (instead of favoriting), and add labels or comments to the recording highlight (instead of a manual tag). Learn how to use Highlights instead of favorites and manual tags.
Segments and filters for things like ‘Visited URL’ or ‘Country’ are no longer available on Basic. These will now become available on our Plus plan, which is designed for larger sites where more traffic is captured and the need to segment and filter really kicks in. On Basic, you can still sort your recordings by all of the existing columns and use Highlights to sort, filter, share, and download your important recordings insights. Learn more about recordings filters and how to use Highlights.
These features are generally only used on larger, business sites where custom branding becomes important. If you have any existing widgets where the background or button color is customized, these won’t change. Learn more about Incoming Feedback and Surveys.
We appreciate that this is a lot of change all at once, but we encourage you to try the new features. If you’re concerned that a feature you really need is no longer available on your current plan, please check out our plans to find the one that works for you.Read More

We're very excited to share with you that Hotjar has joined forces with Contentsquare!
What Hotjar is to entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and mid-market companies, Contentsquare is to enterprises. Founded in Paris in 2012, today they help over 750 enterprises in 26 countries deliver better digital experiences for their customers.
While this opens up an exciting new chapter for Hotjar, both companies will continue to operate independently for the foreseeable future, and rest assured we will maintain the same exact level of service and support to all our clients and continue to deliver on our roadmap as planned.
What this does mean, is that in the near future, we will be accelerating our innovation and new product development as we leverage Contentsquare’s technology and resources; such as their recently launched cookieless technology, their acquisition of machine and deep learning startup Upstride, and their recent $500 million Series E investment round.
As a final note, we reflect on how well the Hotjar core values have guided us throughout our journey these last seven years. We see our next chapter as a great opportunity to put you, our customers, even more at the heart of what we do, whilst being bolder, moving faster and continuing to challenge ourselves to grow. And while things will evolve at Hotjar (no doubt for the better), we promise to stay true to working with respect and gaining your continued trust with transparency.Read More
In a product update back in August, we gave some insight into the evolution of Hotjar and how we’re building a sharper set of tools to help you better understand your users. As part of that update, we shared an unprecedented look at our real business data with you: Hotjar Forms accounts for 2% of monthly activity, and Hotjar Funnels accounts for 6%. As a product-led company, we’re facing the music and confronting the fact that these tools don’t add significant value to you. So we announced that we would retire Hotjar’s Forms & Funnels in the spirit of doubling down on where we can add value through our flagship tools, and giving us long-needed space to build entirely new tools that better solve the problems you face today.
As of December 14, Forms & Funnels will be retired for all Hotjar users. For those who have been using these tools, this will mean that the tools and the data previously collected in them will no longer be accessible.
But we don’t want to leave you hanging, and we absolutely want you to be equipped to create experiences your users love, so we have curated a list of alternative ways to get the insights you might previously have gleaned from Forms & Funnels.
We are so excited about the opportunities that this renewed focus on both sharpening our core tools, and freeing us up to build new ones will bring. We can’t wait to bring you even more powerful insights in the future.
As always, you can check out what we’ve added recently and what we’re working on here in our public roadmap.Read More
If you’re serious about cooking, you don’t want a swiss army knife in your kitchen. You want a proper set of kitchen knives. The same principle applies to software tools, and how we’re thinking about building Hotjar.
In this update, we reflect on Hotjar’s past and look boldly ahead to its future: a sharper set of tools for understanding how users really experience your site and how to provide them with better experiences.
For all the nitty-gritty details, you can read more HERE.
Watch the video and continue reading below for the quick version of the update.
Hotjar capturing data based on pageviews has limited our product innovation. Pageviews are a static instance of a webpage loading: inherently inconsistent and unreflective of the dynamic experience on a website today. Hotjar’s way of working is evolving to capture user sessions: recording a user’s visit to your site (a session) and providing behavior analytics based on their whole visit. We will be updating our subscriptions to be based on how many user sessions you want to capture on your site per month.
Manually starting and restarting a ‘snapshot’ of pageviews to analyze user behavior has been an unnatural step in our users’ workflow. There’s inherent gaps in this kind of data. With our new Continuous Capture mode of gathering insights, you just need to open Hotjar and all the sessions within your plan’s sample will be available to analyze. Less manual work, cleaner data, better Hotjar.
We’re merging Polls and Surveys into one more powerful Surveys tool. Adding context to behavior analytics data through user feedback is key to improving site experience and increasing conversions. We’re doubling down on the analytical depth of Hotjar’s feedback tools.
We’re retiring Forms and Funnels. For us to focus on improving Hotjar’s flagship tools (Heatmaps, Recordings, our feedback tools) we have had to make difficult decisions and prioritize: Forms and Funnels are underused, and we’re open about them not being competitive tools in their space. They’re no longer going to be part of the Hotjar toolkit.
Hotjar’s basic plan is staying free forever. We’re increasing prices of our two most affordable plans - the Plus plan and the lowest tier within our Business plans - by 10 bucks per month. That’s it - nothing crazy or drastic. That’s already gone into effect for new customers. For existing customers: we’ll be in touch to give you plenty of heads-up of the date new pricing comes into effect.
Read on for the story of why and how we’re evolving Hotjar, and more cooking analogies than you can shake a pepper mill at.Read More
