A session is a visitor’s full journey on your site, including every page they visit.
Every time a visitor comes to your site, we’ll record their journey and how they interact with your
page. You can analyze this data in Heatmaps and Recordings.
Many customers choose a plan which lets them capture every session on their site.
However, you don’t have to capture every session. If you pick a smaller plan, we’ll sample your data,
ensuring consistent coverage over the month.
Most customers tend to pick a plan which captures at
least 80% of their site’s traffic.
Installation involves copy and pasting your unique Tracking Code on the site you would
like to track. This tracking code allows you to collect data from your visitors and send it back to
Hotjar. We’ve created guides to help you install the Tracking Code on various platforms that you can
With Hotjar, there is no contract to sign, and you can upgrade or downgrade between
different plans at any time – directly from your account. If you choose to pay monthly, you can cancel
your subscription at any time by downgrading to the free Basic plan.
Yes. One plan allows you to capture data for one site. You can, however, use one plan
for each of your subdomains (e.g., hotjar.co.uk / hotjar.es). If your organization owns multiple sites,
or if you work with clients, you select a plan for each site you set up. You can downgrade and upgrade
your site plans at any time.
Hotjar works differently from other tools that capture session data. Instead of
collecting data from the first 500 sessions and then once you hit your cap, Hotjar automatically
distributes data collection throughout the day (what we call ‘sampling’). Of course, if you pick a plan
that’s equal to the number of sessions on your site, you’ll collect all the data, and there will be no
need for sampling.
For monthly payments, we support all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX,
Maestro, and Discover) and Paypal. For yearly payments on the Business plan, we accept payments via wire
transfer, all major credit cards, and Paypal.

If you cancel after 30 days you’ll be charged up until the end of the
current billing cycle. For customers on a monthly contract, that will be a month after your last
payment. For customers on an annual contract, that will be a year after your last payment.
